]]>Every year, the Swiss Federal Office of Culture (FOC) organizes The Most Beautiful Swiss Books competition to honor outstanding achievements in book design to promote and showcase high-quality book production, with particular attention being paid to works that express contemporary trends.
The 23 Most Beautiful Swiss Books of the 2021 edition were named by the FOC on the recommendation of the jury, whose members are: Sereina Rothenberger (Chair), Vela Arbutina, Gina Bucher, Joost Grootens, and Gregor Huber.
Over three days the works were examined in minute detail from the perspectives of graphic design and typography, quality of printing and binding, and attention to the materials used.
The award-winning books were selected in January 2022 from among the 402 submissions that met the eligibility criteria, and were exhibited at the Helmhaus Zurich from 23–26 June 2022 before traveling to various other locations in Switzerland and abroad.

]]>In 1984, the Apple Macintosh computer was introduced, ushering in a new era of digital type design.
That same year, Rudy VanderLans and Zuzana Licko founded Emigre Graphics in San Francisco. Soon, this typeface foundry and its magazine, Emigre, became the late 20th century’s wellspring of experimental digital typography and graphic design.
A few years later, in 1991, FUSE was founded by Neville Brody and Jon Wozencroft as both a printed and digital publication, becoming a unique showcase for experimental digital-typeface designers and typographers. Replacing bound pages, the magazine’s content came on a computer diskette and included five folded, printed posters that explained and sampled the featured typeface designs.
This show explores Emigre and FUSE through their posters announcing new, progressive digital typefaces.

All of the posters in this exhibition advertise digital typefaces, showcasing the myriad women who are thriving and expanding the world of type design.

In the same way, the congress will be held in Spanish, Portuguese and English, with simultaneous translation.

]]>To publish is to make public. What do artists’ books make public? How do they engage a public? Where do they travel? Where do they end up? What conversations do they spark? What ideas do they push or pull from a work of art? What do they perform? How do they continue to speak across time and generations? Artists’ Books as Prompts for Discourse considers the life of a book after its making and how through its distribution and circulation, a book is activated.
This exhibition attempts to trace the discursive reverberations of the books that have been published and produced through Bay Area-based publishing studio, Sming Sming Books. Founded in 2017 by artist-publisher Vivian Sming, Sming Sming Books works in close collaboration with artists whose works and ideas inform design, material, and printing choices. The studio is committed to promoting critical discourse, advancing cultural equity, and creating alternative sites of knowledge production through publications and public programs.
